Place of apostolate

More than just teaching catechism, it's about being a catechist!

Sister Eugénie Joubert worked tirelessly as a catechist for children and young people, especially the poorest and most abandoned, in keeping with the spirit of the Congregation of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart.

She went even further, devoting herself to a life of apostolate. She was above all interested in all those who, lacking any natural means, required a great deal of patience from her. Without tiring, she would repeat the essential demands of the catechism in a very simple way for children and young people. By dint of prayer and her interior life, Sister Eugénie Joubert loved to pass something of the fire of love that embraced her own into the hearts of the children she taught.

In France: Aubervilliers

Blessed Eugénie Joubert arrived in Aubervilliers, near Paris, in 1896.

The House of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart was located at 154 avenue Victor Hugo, close to the Church of Notre Dame des Vertus.

She was appointed to teach catechism to the local poor children. The room was packed: eighty children for two or three Sisters! Everything was very simple; the necessities were often lacking.

In France: Saint Denis

As the Carmelite Sisters of Saint-Denis were obliged to leave their house, the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart moved in. Sister Eugénie Joubert carried out her apostolate in the premises of the former Carmelite convent. The writings of the time show how much Blessed Eugénie developed a need for humility during these years.

In Belgium: Liège

In 1901, Sister Eugénie Joubert was sent to Liège, to the working-class district of Saint-Gilles. Her elder sister, Sister Marie, also of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart, was superior of the Liège House.

The children of the Saint-Gilles parish are entrusted to her for catechism classes.

In Italy: Rome

During the summer of 1903, Sister Eugénie Joubert was in Rome at what was then the General House of the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart. (via Napoli, at the foot of the Esquiline).

She visited the most venerated shrines and was received in audience with the Community by Pope Leo XIII on 24 May 1903.

Faithful to her apostolate, she taught catechism with kindness and enthusiasm. Her missionary desire was largely fulfilled.
