Transfer of the grave to Liège

Tomb of Blessed Eugénie Joubert in Dinant (1948-2024)

Former chapel of the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart

In 1948, when the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart left Liège for Dinant (diocese of Namur, Belgium), 44 years after Sister Eugénie Joubert, who belonged to this community, had been called to God, they transferred her grave from the cemetery of St. Gilles in Liège, where she had been buried since July 2, 1904, to a church in Dinant, their new home. A few years later, the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart left Dinant and Belgium, leaving Eugénie Joubert’s grave in the church which has since become the chapel of a retirement home.

This is why, on June 30, 2024, under the patronage of Monsignor Jean-Pierre Delville, Bishop of the Diocese of Liège, together with Father Philippe Delaume, parish priest of the Liège-Hauteurs pastoral unit, which includes the parish of St. Gilles, the grave of Blessed Eugénie Joubert was returned to the church of St. Gilles, in a chapel dedicated to her.

Many parishioners from St. Gilles and the surrounding area, pilgrims and “friends of Blessed Eugénie Joubert” from Belgium, France and Italy, attended the event. The reliquary was carried by Damien de Laminne, Lieutenant of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem for Belgium, accompanied by Knights and Ladies of the Order.

On July 2, 2024, the Catholic Church’s feast day for the Blessed, a Holy Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Delville in front of the chapel where Eugénie Joubert now rests, in union of prayer with ceremonies celebrated in Dinant, Yssingeaux (France) and Rome (by the Missionaries of Divine Revelation who live in Rome in the premises of the former Mother House of the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Sacred Heart).

The Blessed’s former grave in the cemetery of St. Gilles, now a cenotaph, is still venerated, as evidenced by the ex-voto and rosary offerings.
